When conversing with others, there are circumstances when we must be especially considerate and learn to be tactful. All of us, at some point in time, may encounter a situation where we must be serious and understanding. Some may ask for us to be formal, while some allows us to be relaxed and casual. These are the types of situations and scenarios that call for us to act responsibly and accordingly. This is why tactfulness, like the proper use of communicative text styles help us to come across with the right message.
Tactfulness helps us to adapt from a situation to another. It helps us to be alert of the current mood and adapt or react appropriately. This, in turn, makes us come across to others better, making sure that the right message comes across. This is especially important as we interact differently with different people. For example, when with friends, we are usually relaxed and often speaking in group language. When writing academic papers, we write formally — employing the use of well-thought-of, properly structured sentences. We do not want to use informal language when writing our academic papers or performing a school presentation. Tactfulness can be employed in these situations to help us come up with the proper language to use.
Being tactful is important in expressing or sending the right thought. We need to be able to read the room, and understand the situation. For example, you would not want to come across as an enemy when you are just trying to prove a point. This is why when talking to others, it is important to put ourselves in their place, think of their situation, and think of the proper response. We must always keep in our minds that other people have feelings, too, and that everyone should, and must be respected.
"Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy." — Sir Isaac Newton
